Professional Organizations

 

American Academy of Actuaries -  While some information is for members/subscribers only, there is a significant amount of free information in the form of Issue Briefs, Monographs, Testimony before Congress, and Friends-of-the-court Briefs. Information is available regarding casualty, life insurance, pensions, Medicare, and Social Security. There is information about educational conferences, Washington Forum, Capitol Briefings, and a limited news page. There are numerous actuarial jobs postings.

 

American Benefits Council - (Formerly known as APPWP) Has news page, articles, available speakers, and members only section for additional information.

 

American Law Institute - American Bar Association (Ali-Aba) - Not just employee benefit related. Has some free material. Course materials (continuing education oriented) are available for a fee.

 

American Society of Pension Actuaries - Wide variety of priced publications regarding defined benefit and defined contribution plans. No free information. Also, an educational conference calendar.

 

Benefit$Alert.com - Has benefits news page, news archive, summary of laws, and a number of articles.

 

benefits.net - This is the ECFC's site. Most available information is for members only. For non-members there are the Capitol Letter and Innovations, which contain information that is often dated. There is a page on flex statistics and basics and a conference calendar.

 

Conference of Consulting Actuaries - Contains a limited news page, publications list for members only, and conference schedule.

 

Employee Benefit Research Institute - Some priced information or information for members only. A large quantity of free survey and research information regarding defined benefit plans, defined contribution plans, Social Security, and retirement patterns.

 

Employers Council on Flexible Compensation - Contains information mostly for members only. There is some dated news items and a conference calendar.

 

ERISA Industry Committee (ERIC) - Lobbies for employer-member's employee benefits interests. Site contains breaking news, and ERIC's statements on policy. ERIC holds spring and fall meetings.

 

The ESOP Association - Contains information mostly for members only. There are some hot topic news items and publications that require a fee for non-members.

 

Financial Accounting Standards Board & Governmental Accounting Standards Board - Order forms for FASB and GASB priced publications. News on projects. Free downloads of proposed standards of financial accounting. Free information in form of "understanding the issues."

 

Foundation for Enterprise Development - Free information kit oriented to employee ownership (including international information). Some free information on employee ownership including some free interactive tools.

 

Health Insurance Association of America - New page and meeting calendar. Numerous publications that require a fee. Not much free information.

 

International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans - Contains news page, conference/seminar calendar, and some free surveys. There are additional surveys and other information in a members-only section. There are numerous jobs postings.

 

National Center for Employee Ownership - Contains numerous articles pertaining to stock ownership and ESOPs.

 

National Institute of Pension Administrators (NIPA) - Annual conference. Accreditation program. Some information for members only.

 

Profit Sharing Council of America - Some information for members only including frequently asked questions and surveys regarding profit sharing/401(k) plans. Contains conference calendar. Has some free studies/surveys.

 

Society of Actuaries - Contains conference and seminar schedule. Also, has a free database of publications and newsletters that can be searched using a search engine included in the site.

 

Society for Human Resource Management - Contains conference calendar and numerous free articles on a variety of Human Resource/Risk Management topics. Topical index helps locate articles. There are numerous Human Resource job postings. Additional information may be obtained by subscription.

 

WEB - The WEB organization meets in local chapters, usually monthly. Meetings afford members the opportunity to hear local speakers and network among fellow professionals. This site has information about conferences and local chapter meetings. There is a job bank.

 

Western Pension & Benefits Conference - This site has a conference and seminar calendar. There are no educational materials on line.

 

World at Work - News page, compensation related surveys, topic briefings, white papers, compensation job postings, and salary budget surveys. Other information available for a fee for non-members.

 

 

Statistical or Informational Sites

 

BenefitsLink - Site has news page, Q&A section where persons pose questions that are answered by professionals, conference calendar, and available speaker list. There are audit guidelines and links to regulations and other governmental sites. There are numerous job postings.

 

Bureau of Labor Statistics - Contains information regarding the economy, career guides, inflation, wages, worker safety, and productivity.

 

Census Bureau - Contains detailed census tables, population projections, income surveys, and economic census data.

 

Courts of Appeals and Supreme Court Cases - Link to Cornell Law School's full text of court cases.

 

Federal Reserve Interest Rates - Federal Funds rates, CD's, Treasury Bills Treasury Constant Maturities, and Corporate Bond Yields.

 

Fedstats - Links to statistics from over 100 US Federal Agencies (not limited to benefits).

 

FreeErisa.com - After completion of free registration, can view Form 5500 information for pension and welfare plans. Also available is information on common or collective trusts, tax exempt organizations, public pension funds, and collective bargaining agreements. Limited number of articles is available.

 

National Center for Health Statistics - CDC sponsored site contains large volume of health surveys and statistics. Has links to other governmental sites with statistical and survey information.

 

PLANSPONSOR.com - After completing free registration, provides news and events, surveys, and other information regarding defined benefit plans, defined contribution plans, and health plans.

 

PlanetErisa.com - After completing free registration, provides Form 5500 information and information on tax-exempt organizations.

 

Public Pension Coordinating Council - A survey web site showing survey results for State and local government retirement systems.

 

 

Governmental Organizations

 

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services - Information about the organization, Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP, HIPPA, and CLIA. Also, has frequently asked questions.

 

Federal Register - Search Federal Register Volumes by using search tools.

 

House Committee on Ways and Means - Provides information on current and proposed legislation and various publications.

 

Internal Revenue Service - This site's information is not limited to benefits. Has 2001 tax forms, forms and publications, tax regulations, Internal Revenue Bulletins, and Applicable Federal Rates. There is a search engine available.

 

Joint Board for the Enrollment of Actuaries - Information on how to become an Enrolled Actuary. Site includes news, exam information, regulations for Enrolled Actuaries and renewal information.

 

National Labor Management Association - Has information designed to facilitate smooth management/labor relationships. Has news, past newsletters, and manual designed to facilitate relationships.

 

Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation - News page, publications, forms for premiums and Form 5500. Has frequently asked questions, PBGC Opinion Letter, QDRO information, and plan termination interest rates. Also, has information on how to locate lost pensioners.

 

SEC Edgar - SEC filings and forms. Has description of various SEC forms. Can review filings of companies that you specify.

 

Social Security Administration - Information on COLA's and frequently asked questions. Can obtain a benefit estimate or request a statement.

 

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services - Available information includes information on health privacy, HIPPA, administration simplification, Medicare, and Medicaid.

 

U.S. DOL - Pension and Welfare Benefits Administration - News page, Advisory Opinions, Technical Releases, Interpretative Bulletins, Enforcement information, Prohibited Transactions listing, Form 5500 series forms, and Federal Register Documents.

 

U.S. House of Representatives - Lists of members and committees. Also contains historical highlights and public disclosures.

 

U.S. Senate - List of Senators by State, committees, and summary of legislative activities.

 

White House - Presidential news, history, and appointments.

 

Your Link to Congress - Provides information on elected officials by zip code. Information includes key voting spotlights. Also available is information on issues and legislation and a quick guide to the media.

 

 

Regulations, Forms, and Legislation

 

Code of Federal Regulations - All Federal Regulations are provided, including IRS regulations. May be searched by key words facility, by entering citation, or by title and volume. Has index to help find title.

 

Department of Labor ERISA Regulations - Has list of DOL ERISA regulations.

 

Department of Labor proposed ERISA Regulations - Has list of DOL proposed ERISA regulations.

 

Form 5500 (efast) - ERISA Filing Acceptance System developed by the Department of Labor, the Internal Revenue Service, and Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation for e-filing of Form 5500 and 5500-EZ.

 

Government Printing Office - Access to government documents under categories of legislative, executive, judicial, and administrative decisions.

 

Internal Revenue Service Bulletins -  Internal Revenue Bulletins contain IRS published regulations, Revenue Rulings, IRS Notices, and IRS Announcements. These can be searched by Bulletin Number or by entering key words in a search function.

 

Internal Revenue Service Forms and Publications - Internal Revenue Forms and Publications and Notices. These can be searched by lists or by entering key words in a search function.

 

Advance Copies of Internal Revenue Service Regulations, Revenue Procedures, Notices, etc.  - Advance copy of IRS notices, regulations, etc. are provided in a listing that remains active until the item is printed in the Internal Revenue Bulletin.

 

Internal Revenue Service Audit Guidelines - IRS audit guidelines and handbooks for qualified plans.

 

Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation Regulations - Has link to Code of Federal Regulations where PBGC regulations can be found.

 

Thomas - Legislative information including texts of bills, Congressional Record, and public laws by number.

 

 

Subscription Services

 

CCH - News page, free newsletters, HR Issues and Answers library, and summaries of Federal law changes. Information on employment law, HR management, and pension and benefits. Subscription provides more detailed information. Can order e-training materials.

 

D&B - Provides business information for subscription. A variety of reports can be ordered with price varying by type of report.

 

DCNews.com - Provides information for subscription regarding defined contribution plans. Some free articles are available.

 

Fortune - Much free information including financial profiles and news about companies including Fortune 100, 500, 1,000. Also includes investing information and small business information. Subscription provides access to additional information.

 

Hoovers - Free financial information and news about companies, but subscription provides access to directory information, officer lists and more analysis.

 

Institutional Investor Newsletter - Financial information and some free news about companies provided free, but subscription provides access to more news, database product, and books.

 

IPE.com - Free new from Investments & Pensions Europe magazine for pension funds and their advisors regarding European pension markets, legislation, asset allocation, and industry news.

 

Pension & Investments - Headlines, free money manager directory and pension fund directory. Free special reports. Much more upon subscription.

 

PensionPlanet.com - Qualified plan, health & welfare plan, top executive, and tax-exempt organization information available by subscription.

 

RIA - Tax research materials including software. Limited free information.

 

Spencernet - Subscription reports regarding employee benefits. Free subscription available for their newsletter - The Employee Benefit Plan Review.

 

TaxBase - No free information. Subscription provides access to state, federal, and international information. A source of government tax-related materials including revenue rulings, regulations, revenue procedures, and private letter rulings.
